Horizon TrialsHORIZONS Trial Finds Superior Outcomes with Bivalirudin in STEMI Patients Treated with Primary PCI
October 2007
Dr. Gregg Stone from the Cardiovascular Research Foundation reported the 30 day results from the HORIZONS Trial at the annual TCT meeting in Washington, DC. Patients with ST-elevation MI (STEMI) undergoing primary PCI were randomized to anticoagulation with heparin + glycoprotein IIb/IIIa platelet inhibitors versus bivalirudin, a direct thrombin inhibitor (Angiomax, the Medicines Company). The primary endpoints were significantly better with bivalirudin --with lower rates of major bleeding and NACE (net adverse clinical events = MACE + major bleeding). MACE (death, re-infarction, urgent TVR and stroke) rates were similar, but there was a strong trend for less mortality with bivalirudin (Table). The LeBauer Cardiovascular Research Foundation was the leading U.S. enroller in the trial and Dr. Bruce Brodie, our local principal investigator, was on the Steering Committee for the trial. Sally Milks, RN, Debbie Gettinger, RN and Vivian Garman, RN were our clinical coordinators. Click to continue...
